Indonesian Batik ''A Living Heritage''
To present the exhibition and answer your questions the German Ambassador Dr. Norbert Baas, Coordinator of the "Clean Batik Initiative" (CBI), Mr. Martin Krummeck, the German Batik artist Mr. Joachim Blank, Batik collector Mr. Rudolf G. Smend and representatives from the “Iwan Tirta Foundation” will be present at the press conference.
The exhibition "Indonesian Batik: A Living Heritag" pays homeage to one of the most enchanting art forms found in Indonesia. It will highlight the intercultural exchange between Germany and Indonesia through art and will be displayed at Galeri Nasional Jakarta
The exhibition aims to show the path batik has taken internationally and in Indonesia by firstly conveying Batik's rich history, inform about its traditional almost forgotten - production processes and to provide an insight into the meaningful symbols and motives used. The concepts of the exhibition then includes to build in Indonesia and to interlink it with its artistic influence in Eurpe, especially in Germany, where Batik has surprisingly long tradition and the contemporary use of Batik which can be found in architectural interpretation of Batik, allegorized in a project realized in London by Indonesian artists, modern automotive design and fashion as well as art, for example by a display of contemporary Batik by Iwan Tirta and other artists, also from Germany.
Another important aspect of addressing the future of Batik is the environmental issue where sustainable Batik production is presented via Clean Batik Initiative (CBI) of the German - Indonesian Chamber of Commerce EKONID. The CBI Project, which was launched in 2010 under the EU Switch-Asia programme, aims to train Batik producers in using more environmental friendly and sustainable production methods. It has already accomplished to complete trainings in Central Java and supported 300 SMEs
The incorporation of the CBI Project wants to create awareness for the production methods and to encourage young Indonesians to have a deeper insight in the production methods of Batik.
